Ice Cream Shops Across America

Labor Day Weekend may signal the end of most summer activities, but our affection for ice cream cannot be confined to merely one season — not to mention it's still pretty dadgum hot out there. Here are some of our favorite ice cream parlors, shops and roadside stands across the country.

Aglamesis Brothers -Cincinnati, OH

Old-fashioned ice cream doesn't get any better than Aglamesis Brothers, a Cincinnati favorite since 1908. Consistent quality in a nostalgic setting will make you long for a simpler time.

Bi-Rite Creamery & Bakeshop – San Francisco, CA

Locally sourced and organic ingredients go into the fabulous ice cream flavors at Bi-Rite Creamery & Bakeshop. The small-batch production lends comfort to the quality-obsessed.

Brown's Old Fashioned Ice Cream - York, ME

After a visit to the Cape Neddick Lighthouse and Sohier Park, grab some great frozen treats at Brown's Old Fashioned Ice Cream. The scoops are hefty, and there's plenty of free parking. This is a roadside stand, but there are a few picnic tables.

Bubbie’s Homemade Ice Cream & Desserts- Honolulu, HI

Beginning with raw natural ingredients and processing them slowly in small batches, Bubbie's mochi ice cream maintains an intense flavor. Among the near two dozen varieties available are classics (such as vanilla and mint), island tastes (guava and sakura) and beverages made lick-able (green tea and espresso).

Four Seas Ice Cream- Centerville, MA

With more than twenty flavors available at any given time (many made with local New England fruit) this unassuming ice cream store has been producing what many folks agree is the best ice cream in the Hyannis Port area since 1934.

Hansen’s Sno-Bliz- New Orleans, LA

Hansen's Sno-Bliz on Tchoupitoulas Street has been an iconic warm-weather Crescent City stop since 1939. Finely shaved ice and house-made syrups uphold the Hansen’s motto: “There are no shortcuts to quality."

Ici Ice Cream – Berkeley, CA

Small-batch ice cream, sorbets, candies and cookies fill the bill at Berkeley favorite Ici. This artisan shop even makes its own cones, complete with a drop of chocolate to fill the hole.

Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlor & Restaurant – Dania Beach, FL

For more than five decades, Jaxson’s has provided quality homemade ice cream in an old-fashioned, fun atmosphere to locals and travelers alike. The “Kitchen Sink” is reserved for parties of four or more.

Murrays Ice Cream & Cookies – Kansas City, MO

Owner Murray Nixon entices her customers with a daily changing menu of 16 house-made flavors chosen from nearly 200 possibilities that have been developed since the shop opened in 1984. The one constant: the cream cheese-based chocolate flake fromage.

Yum Yum Better Ice Cream and Hot Dogs – Greensboro, NC

From its start way back in 1906 with Wisdom B Aydelette Sr. ( the man who said, “If you want to live a long time, eat a lot of Yum Yum every day.”) Yum Yum Better Ice Cream remains owned and operated by the family and a perennial favorite of UNC-Greensboro students, faculty and staff.

Zaharako's – Columbus, IN

Fresh-baked waffle cones and bowls are the only way to fly through the ice cream treats at Zaharako’s, a city mainstay since 1900. An old-time ice cream parlor in every way, Zaharako’s features a beautiful marble soda fountain and an 1870 orchestrion.
