DESCRIPTION
The aromas drifting out the screen door of The Enrico Biscotti Co. in Pittsburgh's historic Strip District are enough to bring Atkins dieters to tears (or to their senses at least). Larry Lagattuta quit his day job in 1995 to open this labor of love, which now is recognized as one of the top bakeries in the country. In addition to the oversized biscotti, which come in varieties such as anise almond, macadamia nut, cranberry pistachio, and vanilla with dark chocolate, locals swear by fresh-from-the-oven macaroons, whenever they are available. (Lagattuta bakes what he wants, when he wants.) Various scones, cookies, tortes and other coffee-complementing delights are offered as well. An adjoining café serves up quiches, pizzas baked in a wood-burning oven and house-made desserts. For those who want a go at the dough themselves, there are bread-making classes once a month in the café.
"If you like Italian cookies, scones or coconut macaroons, or strawberry balsamic vinegar tortes, or chewy focaccias still warm from the oven, or artisan pizzas topped with sausage from the local Parma sausage company, you will love Enrico Biscotti Company. This tiny storefront bakery, which Larry Lagattuta opened in 1995 as 'stress relief' from his corporate job with Lucent Technlogies, has become a foodies' mecca in Pittsburgh's most seriously food-focused neighborhood."
- Michael Stern, Roadfood.com, June 29, 2007
