Classic eatery Ritter's Diner has been in operation since about 1950, when it first opened in a boxcar parked near Station Square. Since 1966 it has been owned and operated by the Velisaris family, moving to the Bloomfield neighborhood in 1975. Truly a place that time forgot, with its long counter, small booths and a juke box, Ritter's Diner attracts doctors and attorneys alongside police officers and truck drivers, all of whom are greeted by no-nonsense, veteran waitresses who call you sweetheart. The menu specializes in hearty breakfasts all day (try the pancakes - particularly the buckwheat cakes - a bagel sandwich or the feta cheese omelet), burgers and fries, gyros, fried green tomatoes, meat loaf with mashed potatoes and gravy, and banana cream pie for dessert.
"One of my favorites at Ritter's is their western omelet with home fries and wheat toast with a cup of hot coffee. Also, another good menu item is their fried green tomatoes. ... They are fried to perfection and tasty. Don't forget to ask for some ranch dressing on the side!"
- The Pittsburgh TasteBuds blog, June 16, 2010
