DESCRIPTION
Vintage family photos adorn the walls at The Kingfish Cafe, a family-owned, upscale soul food eatery in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. Long lines and soft jazz streaming from the unassuming storefront are the norm, while inside, the pair of stylish but homey dining rooms are frequently busy as well. Service is distinguished by its Southern charm and hospitality. Buttermilk fried chicken served with buttery mashed potatoes and gravy top the menu, but the classically prepared entrées and sides — tender catfish, fall-off-the-bone barbecue, sweet-and-sour collard greens, macaroni and cheese, and spicy Creole gumbo with cornbread — are all mouthwatering. Desserts are seasonal and should not be missed, nor eaten alone since portions are huge. Try the red velvet cake with buttercream frosting, multi-layered chocolate cake served with two mounds of whipped cream, or the sweet potato pie. Sunday brunch serves fried chicken, grits, succotash, egg tortes and buttermilk griddlecakes.

"The inspiration of sisters Laurie and Leslie Coaston, Kingfish Café uses family recipes to create its menu of sophisticated Southern fare. Dishes include huge portions of slow-roasted pork chops topped with fruit chutney, catfish cooked on a sizzling griddle, spicy gumbo and a signature mac 'n' cheese."
